THURSDAYS THOUGHTS: one of my favorite things!
My new reality TV obsession is "So You Think You Can Dance?". It's the dance equivalent of "American Idol" and, similarly, people come out of the woodwork to claim their 15 minutes of fame.
Now, I'm all for following your passion and living your dreams but some people seem completely disconnected from reality when it comes to assessing their own talent. You'd think you would want to figure that out before a national TV appearance, right? I mean, how do they watch previous seasons and show up with mediocre skills; no technique, no performance ability and no WOW factor? Hmmm...
But what really gets me is when people are applauded for ferocious kicks that whack themselves in the head or cranking their back into positions you know will eventually lead to surgery and a love affair with Pilates (not such a bad thing...) Having that incredible facility is amazing but when it's not balanced with strength, control, technique, style, intention and grace; it's hard to enter someone into the category of dancer. That's just my opinion.
But among the no-talent-having (That sounds so cruel. How 'bout "non-dancers"), flailing contortionists, there are some absolutely spectacular dancers! I could only dream of possessing that much talent and versatility!!! It's so much fun to see young people having their greatest dreams fulfilled. Their passion and commitment is palpable and I feel so emotionally connected to their experiences. For many, this is just the beginning of amazing careers as professional dancers.
