Feel Good Fridays: giving back to self
Yesterday, I craved dance. I missed my form of self-expression. Yes, Pilates keeps me moving but I missed emotion-based movement. So, today... I danced... and it felt divine.. and admittedly a little exhausting. My friend joined me in the studio where we blasted everything from hip-hop to neo-clasic soul and just played.
It was so important to "set my soul free" because I feel as if I've been operating on automatic pilot recently. I don't like living in that disconnected state. But that's what happens when I pile on the workload and forget about "self". Now I feel refreshed and as if I can return to work with a clear head. I can teach with clear intention and feel more connected to my clients. It's in that state that I absolutely love what I do.
Whatever it is that "sets your soul free"... indulge yourself. You deserve it. And you need it. As Pilates instructors, we devote so much of our time and energy helping others. It's imperative we give back to ourselves so that we feel grounded, whole and complete.

Hey - Kira! I love what you said about dance. I just need it from time to time - feeling based movement restores my soul!
Dr. John's "Such a Night" and Muddy Waters "Mannish Boy" both from The Last Waltz album - well I gotta say - I'm working on pieces to those tracks...I listen to that stuff and I have no choice but to move. I am moved by them.
So thanks for mentioning emotion based movement. I am passionate about teaching Pilates and thrilled when I see a client "get it". but there is NO SUBSTITUTE for moving with feeling to music. Body, mind and spirit flow!
